ELTE | ORTHPOL | ISEES WORKSHOP: UNKNOWN AND FORGOTTEN ROMANIAN CATECHISMS (Late 17th Century – Early 18th Century)

23 January 2026

Venue:
Eötvös Loránd University – Faculty of Humanities – Department of Romanian Philology. (1088, Budapest, Múzeum körút 4 A, 1st floor, room 144)

Convenor: Levente NAGY

The workshop seeks to discuss the unpublished theological works of Đorđe Branković (Ђорђе Бранковић) / Gheorghe Brancovici (d. 1711). A fascinating figure, Branković is mostly known for his political projects and historiographical work. However, since the manuscripts containing his theological contributions – long considered lost – have resurfaced, we have decided to study them in their historical, theological, and linguistic context. Our aim is to publish these works in a critical edition, thereby making them accessible for further scholarly study.

This event is jointly organized by:

– Eötvös Loránd University – Faculty of Humanities – Department of Romanian Philology (Budapest);

-“ORTHPOL – Orthodoxies and Politics: The Religious Reforms of Mid-17th Century in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe”, project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant agreement No. 950287);

-The Institute for South-East European Studies of the Romanian Academy (Bucharest).
